The UofU marching band is were I started to really love playing drums the crowds the excitement the physical demands I had to learn fast and push myself hard.
I gained valuable experience at the U where the requirements meant rocking the guitar ensemble, swinging the big band and then shifting gears to play percussion with the orchestra.
Yet it was private instruction from amazing instructors Kelly Wallis, Sneez, and Doug Wolfe who not only mentored me but gave me the tools to build my own approach to music. I have performed for large crowds, small crowds and network tv audiences with great original artists such as Kalai, Two and A Half White Guys, Kevin Burdick and Brenn Hill, blah blah blah.
The important thing is that I take seriously the tradition of drumset and inspiring a new generation that will propel this fascinating instrument into the future.
Music is a universal language that everyone can understand. Most people tend to say I can't, but believe me you can. Without the ability to naturally synthesize rhythm, we would be stumbling in trip stop shape.
From a bird song, to a heartbeat, sound is everywhere. We're all capable of letting our imagination capture the feeling of a great beat and with a little bit of work we can actually participate in it's creation. Listen to the world and you will feel the pulse of life.
The learning of music is noble, and whether you pursue music professionally and become a drummer native to Utah who plays with the best musicians and eats sleeps and dreams drums, like me, or if you want to see what it's all about, music will never again be relegated to just background noise.
You will realize that you too can enjoy the sheer kinetic energy of throwing a bundle sticks down on the coolest looking instrument on stage, the drums.
In my pursuit to play drums to anything and with anyone, I have expanded my pocket of groove and become comfortable exploring all the beats. I believe learning to play the drums is a journey that is never completed, a journey that is the most fulfilling in life, the pursuit of greatness.
My belief is that sharing my knowledge of drumset is a gift received both by the dedicated and the enthusiast. My lessons are structured uniquely for the individual while there is a core curriculum of technique, rudiments, reading and fundamental independence, I respect that there is more than one way to skin a cat or hit a drum in this case.
